This album is a collaborative recording by cellist Zhang Mengyuan and pianist Huang Qiuning, produced and recorded by renowned sound engineer Liu Da. Titled "Epoque: Shi Hai", this is not merely a cross-cultural music album bridging East and West—it is also a sonic journey through cultural philosophy. Centered around the cello, the album explores the “voices of the four seas,” allowing listeners to feel the resonance between the self and the world through familiar melodies, and to touch the fleeting and the eternal through the convergence of Eastern and Western music. The image of “all rivers flowing into the sea” subtly conveys a sense of reverence for and exploration of the natural order. The cello’s deep resonance, in harmony with the natural sounds woven into the bow’s touch, creates an immersive soundscape—a realm of heaven and earth.
This is the debut studio album of young cellist Zhang Mengyuan. She began studying the cello at the age of four and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Professor Chen Weiping. In 2020, she was awarded a full scholarship from Haus Marteau in Bavaria and received mentorship from numerous prominent teachers. She is currently studying at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in Germany, under the tutelage of Mr. Tian Bonian, principal cellist of the Cologne Opera House and the Gürzenich Orchestra.
Pianist Huang Qiuning, who accompanies Zhang on this album, is a U.S.-trained pianist and chamber musician. She is currently an associate professor and master’s supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, as well as a member of the Shanghai Musicians Association.
"Epoque: Shi Hai" takes the cello as its central voice and integrates natural ambient sounds to construct an immersive sonic landscape that evokes the harmony of heaven and earth. It showcases the unique beauty of East-West musical fusion. Through the expressive power of the cello, paired with the textures of nature, the album invites listeners into a poetic and evocative musical world. This innovative endeavor not only reflects the artists’ deep musical understanding but also demonstrates their commitment to exploring the fusion of tradition and modernity, and Eastern and Western musical elements.
