Most top flamenco guitarists come from Spain, but this gifted musician from Texas is a remarkable exception. No American since Al Di Meola has captured the soul of this age-old Andalusian tradition so completely.
On his debut album, the nimble-fingered McGuire is joined by dynamic percussionists and vocalists who provide traditional palmas (rhythmic handclaps), along with Barry Rietveld—bassist from Santana—and singer Jose Manuel Blanco, known as “El Grillo.” The album offers a lively, joyful exploration of flamenco, highlighting its full range of styles and creative expression.
“Lagrimas de Sol” (“Tears of the Sun”) enchants with mesmerizing colombianas, while “Rachel Camela” dances through intricate alegrias rhythms. The title track adds a rich layer with violin harmonizing over energetic tangos beats. One of the standout pieces, “Aires de Mozambique,” has a subtle Afro-Cuban flavor that gives it a unique groove.
McGuire’s blend of technical finesse and heartfelt emotion transports flamenco from the sun-drenched landscapes of Spain to the soul of Texas.
