Wham! (briefly known in the US as Wham! UK) was a prominent English pop duo formed in Bushey in 1981, consisting of singers George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. Their musical journey in the 1980s marked them as one of the most successful pop acts, with over 30 million certified records sold worldwide from 1982 to 1986.
In 1983, Wham! released their debut album, "Fantastic," which showcased influences from funk and soul music. The album addressed social issues such as the United Kingdom's unemployment problem and the challenges of adolescence. The duo's second studio album, "Make It Big," released in 1984, became a global phenomenon, reaching number one in both the UK and the United States. The singles from the album, including "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Everything She Wants," and "Careless Whisper," all claimed the top spots on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Wham! played a pivotal role in the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US, contributing to their widespread popularity. In 1985, they embarked on a highly publicized ten-day visit to China, marking the first visit by a Western pop group. This event was considered a significant milestone in enhancing friendly bilateral relations between China and the West.
The duo's success was substantial, but in 1986, Wham! disbanded. George Michael expressed a desire to create music for a more sophisticated adult audience rather than catering primarily to teenagers.
George Michael passed away on Christmas Day in 2016, at the age of 53, succumbing to heart and liver disease at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. The legacy of Wham! endures as a symbol of the vibrant 1980s pop music scene.
